1. Winner 2011 - Outstanding delivery in child & maternal health
Mookai Rose Bi-Bayan (MRBB)
Mookai Rose Bi-Bayan (MRBB) is a community organisation located in Cairns that provides pre andpost natal care to women from Cape York, Torres Strait and Gulf communities. MRBB has been providing health, wellbeing and accommodation services since 1983 to clients referred through community clinics, RFDS and Cairns Base Hospital.
The absence of birthing facilities in Cape York communities means that pregnant women must come to Cairns for a period of up to 3 months before the birth of their baby. MRBB is the only service in Far North Queensland that provides a combined accommodation and primary health care service for these women requiring ante and post natal care and support. Since its establishment MRBB have developed long lasting relationships with Cape York families and have contributed significantly to the health and wellbeing of Aboriginal and Torres Strait women and children.
2. Winner 2011 - Environmental health initiatives
Mary G Enterprises
Mary G and her Producer Mark Bin Bakar and their company Mary G Enterprises has passionately and successfully broken new ground, in making a difference to the ATSI community through their unique style, grace and technique of creating a positive image, awareness and education of important preventive measures in preventive primary health. She has travelled the length and breadth of the country working in areas like social and emotional wellbeing, depression and suicide, Opportunistic checkups; Personal health and domestic hygiene, anti-smoking campaigns, elder abuse, adolescent sexual health, eating healthy correct foods, binge drinking and safe sex awareness, education and its importance. Getting the message across, absorbed and embraced has been the success in a culturally appropriate manner.
3. Winner 2011 – Improving access to primary health care
Western Desert Nganampa Walytja Palyantjaka Tjutaku Aboriginal Corporation, NT
Ten years ago the people from Kintore in NT and Kiwirrkurra in WA painted some pictures and had an option of selling the paintings at the gallery of NSW and raised a million dollars to improve life for their family members with kidney disease. This is a Community controlled, non-government organisation which provides dialysis in the bush in remote communities and a range of holistic services in Alice Springs.
